Top 15 Albums of 2014 (Liv’s List)

This year has been a whirlwind for music releases; week after week, new albums have appeared left and right. Some have been amazing, and some…well, some could have been better (but we won’t name names). Anyway, here are my picks for TOP 14 Best albums of 2014 (in no particular order).

15. Lowborn by Anberlin, released on July 22nd, 2014, via Tooth & Nail Records.

anberlin

What a fantastic final album; it’s bittersweet, but such a work of art. It’s emotionally charged, with stunningly well-written lyrics, not that I’d ever expect anything less from Anberlin.

14. Cavalier Youth by You Me At Six, released on January 26th, 2014, via Virgin Records.

you me at six

The band’s fourth studio album is every bit of fresh, original, and entrancing as their first. You Me At Six seem to get more personal on the album, and approach a more pop-rock sound than on their previous releases.

13. Restoring Force by Of Mice & Men, released on January 28th, 2014, via Rise Records.

restoring force of mice and men

You know an album is good when a band goes the extra mile and records an acoustic version of it in its entirety. There is a raw power throughout Restoring Force, and the brilliance behind it is impossible to ignore. The departure from the modern standard brings ripples to the scene overall, but also showcases the growth and artistic development of each member in Of Mice & Men.

12. Head Or Heart by Christina Perri, released on April 1st, 2014, via Atlantic Records.

Christina_Perri_-_Head_or_Heart_(Official_Album_Cover)

Personally, I adore this album. Not as much as her Ocean Way Sessions album, but it’s definitely up there as far as favorites go. There is so much vulnerability, personality, and vocal power on this album, it demands to be replayed.

11. Vessels by Stellar Young, released on December 16th, 2014.

 vessels sy

As said in my review, “Vessels has a sound that I could only imagine the musical lovechild between Anberlin and fun. would. Stellar Young prove to be a wildly talented group, not that there was ever any doubt about that. The album is beautifully executed, with a powerhouse presence and an undoubtable quality to it. ”

10. In The Lonely Hour by Sam Smith, released on May 26th, 2014, via Capitol Records.

Sam_Smith_In_the_Lonely_Hour

There is so much beauty and power displayed on this album. Every song is enchanting in its own right, launching Sam Smith into the limelight as the true star he is. Finally, the soul has been brought back to pop music!

9. 1989 by Taylor Swift, released on , 2014 via Big Machine Records.

16365103

As someone who has followed Taylor Swift’s career from the beginning, it amazes me to see the personal growth of the songstress, typically known for tearing down her exes and writing every girl’s breakup anthem. On 1989, Swift shows a more mature, poetic approach, with an original artistic flare. There’s something on this album for everyone, including some of the catchiest lines…and the best misheard lyric of 2014. “Gotta love those Starbucks lovers…”

8. Bloom & Breathe by Gates, released on October 21st, 2014, via Pure Noise Records.

PromoImage.jpg

Wow. A debut album that has a cinematic, sophisticated sound to it, and is genuinely a work of art. Throughout the album, the band’s dedication to their craft, and their limitless talent, is obvious. I’m expecting a lot from these guys!

7. Imaginary Enemy by The Used, released on April 1st, 2014, via Hopeless Records.

1642

If you didn’t rock out to “Cry” at some point this year (especially you Octane Radio listeners/gym rats!), you’re lying to yourself. That single set the spark for this album, and once I listened, I couldn’t get enough. I daresay I’ve played this album more than I should have, but it was worth it.

6. May Death Never Stop You by My Chemical Romance, released on March 25th, 2014 on Reprise Records.

512

Another bittersweet listen in 2014; it was brilliant in its musicality and as an overall summary of an amazing band’s career, but so hard to listen to knowing it was the last MCR release. As far as “greatest hits” albums go, I’m voting this as one of the best. “Fake Your Death” is such an anthemic, brilliant new track, and I love delving into my nostalgic side through the older tracks.

5. Forever Halloween (Deluxe Edition) by The Maine, released on June 17th, 2014, via Universal.

the-maine-new1

Forever Halloween was amazing; the deluxe edition? INCREDIBLE. As I said in my review for Infectious Magazine, “While Forever Halloween was near-perfect as it was, it is difficult to imagine the album without these extra songs now that they’ve been heard. The Maine continue to show growth and excellence as the years wear on.”

4. Duality by Set It Off, released on October 14th, 2014, via Equal Vision Records.

setitoffalbum

Brilliant, catchy tracks, all decorated with the originality of Set It Off. This reminds me of a heavier version of The Cab’s Symphony Soldier in that I just want to play the whole album again and again and again.

3. Talking In Your Sleep by The Cinema, released on December 16th, 2014 [independently released].

the cinema

I have so much respect for this album. First off, because it comes from the minds of two very talented men, but also because the album took two years to make, and was accomplished while they both worked on different coasts. Just…wow. It’s an incredible group of songs, and, best of all, it’s another release that avoided the cursed “sophomore slump.”

2. Slow Me Down by Sara Evans, released on March 11th, 2014, via RCA Nashville.

slow me down

Catchy as hell, with a poppy, uptempo tone that is impossible not to love. It’s a perfect driving/car-aoke record; I promise, you’ll sing your heart out to basically every song.

1. Heart On My Sleeve by Mary Lambert, released on October 14th, 2014, via Capitol Records.

mary lambert

Mary Lambert can do no wrong. The songstress has crowds enchanted with her stunning vocals and her fearless way of tackling subjects people don’t want to talk about. With songs like “Secrets,” Lambert has resonated with listeners, and opened up a beautiful story.

Best Foot Forward: WASI

Image

There is nothing like the summer. From the music festivals to the new releases, everything about the music scene screams fun and fresh. There’s nothing better than coming across a fresh-face on the music scene. WASI, comprised of Jess (bass/vox/synth), Cosmo (guitar/vox/synth), and Carlo (drums), is one of those extraordinary new bands gracing the scene. Despite being relatively new, the band seems to have it all dialed in, working on their debut EP and already causing a lot of buzz.

When it comes time to release a debut EP, many artists are a mixed bag of emotions, ranging from ecstatic to frantic. “I can’t tell if there’s any nervousness involved… it’s all just a bundle of excitement right now,” Cosmo claims. “Of course there’s the worry of no one liking what you have to put out, but, at the same time, we know that we’re doing this for ourselves and for the ones who care about WASI (not the ones that don’t) and that’s whom we have to stay true to.”

“We’re very excited about getting out the material we’ve been working on,” Carlo adds. “I think anyone who liked our songs so far is going to like the new stuff too.”

Putting their best foot forward, WASI is off to a great start before they’ve even entered the studio. Not only do they have the right attitude, but they’ve also picked the right producer, which goes a long way on a debut. Matt Squire, known for working with acts like All Time Low, Good Charlotte, Panic! At The Disco, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Boys Like Girls, The Cab, and many more, will be behind WASI’s debut EP. “We’re on the same page on what we want to showcase through our new songs. We love the guys we’ve been working with as We Are / She Is (Pete Mills and Donal Finn), but we figured we might as well try something new with a new producer. Sometimes not changing anything up at all can be scarier than the changes themselves! But Matt was so cool. The minute we met him, we instantly clicked,” Cosmo says, explaining the choicee of Matt Squire. “We vibe on each other’s styles and personalities. He’s incredibly approachable and passionate with what WASI is about. He dug ‘And the World’ and shared with us how it made him feel – and hearing that from such a legendary producer was so rad.”

Treating every song like single, WASI produce tunes that are unlikely to become stale. With two singles out already, “And The World” and “Adolescents,” the group’s fan base is just getting larger by the minute. “Adolescents” has already received radio play throughout the country, as well as in Sweden and New Zealand.

When asked if she knew the song would blow up the way it has, Jess is quick to say: “Absolutely not! [Cosmo and I] write together with me on synth and her on guitar, then start to hum a melody as she writes lyrics on the spot that fit the melody. This is how she and I have always written together.

“In fact, when we started a band together in high school, neither of us knew how to play our instruments. Cosmo booked a show and it was on and we learned to play our instruments after.  We pretty much learned how to play our instruments together while writing songs. It’s really cool because now that we have Carlo, we have a third head and perspective and he is a big help in the arrangement of the songs.”

“Yeah, we seriously had no idea people were going to like it as much as they did! We took it to the studio to record within a month of writing it. We didn’t have any plans for what we were going to do with it, but we liked we had and it meant something to us, so we rolled with our guts, which is so much of what WASI stands for; we’re not about selling our souls or molding to what other people want to see of us. We’re about doing it our way,” Cosmo adds.

Previously named We Are/She Is, WASI pulls from unity in individuality. Even when shortened, the name is memorable and thought provoking. “We’ll let you finish the start of the sentence “We are/ She is …”  for yourself. But I hope you end it with the word ‘badass’! ” Carlo laughs. It’s the unapologetic boldness of the group as a collective that make WASI one to watch.

“Since the three of us have been playing together, it feels like the chemistry has taken off,” says Jess. “I’m most excited to start playing new songs in our shows. It is always fun to think of new ideas of how to make the live show better and I feel like the new songs will showcase that.”

Even if they haven’t finished picking all of the tracks that will make the cut on the EP, WASI know exactly what direction they’re heading to with their unique sound. “Our new music comes from an dark, angsty, yet optimstic, place…which is hard to grasp because our sound is so upbeat and happy,” Cosmo admits. “This particular EP is going to be a blend of the songs on our Double Single, ‘And the World’ and ‘Adolescents.’ We write songs built around a bunch of hooks and a beat that will keep you on your feet; they tell stories of what we go through emotionally and physically, from being dead broke eating PB & J sandwiches three times a day to rioting on the streets for something you believe in.”

One listen to WASI’s double single, and it’s doubtful that they will be singing about being broke and eating PB & Js for much longer. The true ability of an artist lies in their capability to connect with their audience; to move them. You can be as talented as you want, but if you can’t connect, it doesn’t mean much.

Along with their wonderful ability to connect to listeners via music, WASI can also connect on a personal level. Recently partnering with the Keep a Breast foundation, WASI strive to work with the foundation to promote awareness of methods of both the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. “It was a huge deal for me that Keep a Breast was interested in partnering with us,” expresses Jess. “I have been a huge fan for years and both my mom and grandmother were inflicted with breast cancer.  In 2010, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which I know isn’t breast, but cancer foundations have been a big part of my life for some years now.”

“We all have been directly or indirectly affected by cancer and therefore cancer awareness (be it breast cancer or any other) is very dear to us,” Carlo explains. “We believe that everybody should commit to causes greater than themselves in general, it’s the only way we can become better as a society.”

Cosmo agrees, stating: “Keep a Breast in so inspiring to us, and we share that vision of eradicating breast cancer. The first place to start is to spread the knowledge!”

As their career rapidly moves forward,  WASI seem to be on the fast-track to success. With a self-proclaimed “do-it-yourself attitude” and an unbelievable amount of sheer dedication, there is no doubt that the next few years will be a whirlwind for the trio. When asked where they see themselves in five years, Carlo, seemingly the jokester of the group, deadpans, “Retired.”

“[J]ust joking,” he says. “We’d all be terribly bored not playing out music all the time! Hopefully, we’ll be headlining our own tours and have a few albums out by then.”

“I really want to tour, tour, tour, because the live show is such a huge part of what we do,” chimes in Jess.

With a summertime sound and an electrifying amount of personality, WASI are here to stay. For more information on the band, please click HERE. To purchase their double single, click HERE.

Some tidbits from the Q&A:

PS: What advice would you give your younger self and why?

Cosmo: Trust your guts. If it doesn’t work, change things up and keep going.  Stay smart, keep up a great attitude, and have fun.

Carlo: Don’t doubt yourself. There’s a lot of energy being wasted in doubt and insecurity. If you are dedicated and focused and humble enough, everything else will eventually fall in place.

Jess: You can play music if you really want to.  Make a bunch of friends and as the quote goes, “Find what you love and let it kill you.”  Don’t give up.  It sounds really cheesy but we have seen great things happen for friends that stick with it and we have been encouraged by many people in the industry to do just that.

PS: Any last words?

Carlo: Just a quote from Karl Marx on his deathbed: “Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough.”

Cosmo: Winter is Coming

Jess: Take everything with a grain of salt.  If we took what everyone has ever told us seriously we would have given up a long time ago.

1001 Songs Challenge: Day 11 (FINALLY BACK ON TRACK)

Image

First of all, let me apologize for my lack of updates. I have been ridiculously busy and had no time. The good news is, you’re in for a treat! I have tons of pictures to share from the Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Tonight Alive, and Sleepwave show the other night. But for now, onto the classics!

Day Eleven was one I was dreading. My first day back after a few days off, and I was convinced I was going to hit a roadblock and not want to listen at all. I am very pleased to report that I was wrong.

1. One For My Baby (and One More For The Road) – Frank Sinatra

Ahh, Sinatra; the good stuff. You want to hear a true classic, you let Sinatra’s voice fill your room. If you say you don’t want to dance or sing, you’re a dirty liar. This track was his breakthrough from teen sensation to icon, and it is fabulous. There is so much conviction and emotion behind Sinatra’s voice, that it is a truly memorable song.

2. Le poinçonneur des Lilas – Serge Gainsbourg

The piano melody featured is familiar, but I am almost positive I’ve never heard the actual song before. I found myself enjoying it, especially because it produced a feeling of nostalgia in me; I felt like I was back in French class while my teacher tried to “immerse” us in French culture. Serge Gainsbourg’s rapid French only adds to the song’s charm, surprisingly.

3. Nel blu dipinto di blu – Domenico Modugno

This is a beautiful song, and I remember loving it as a kid. Mind you, I was used to a cover with a more rapid pace, but I think that has helped me fall in love with the original. A perfect Italian track!

4. All I Have To Do Is Dream – The Everly Brothers

I actually like this song. I think it’s a sweet love song, with a memorable sound that is indicative of the culture shift in the US during the 1950s; a very mellow/rock and roll sound had developed, and it was becoming more and more popular…the innocence is also there, “Gee wiz,” as a lyric is a sign of that (“Gee wilickers, Wally!”).

5. To Know Him Is To Love Him – The Teddy Bears

There is a reason this song has remained a classic all of these years: it’s sweet, melodic, and relatable. Unrequited love will always be around, and there will be many more people to sing about it, even if they don’t carry off the perfect vocal harmonies featured here.

6. Brand New Cadillac – Vince Taylor & His Playboys

The opening guitar of this track is iconic, and probably what sets it apart from the rest. There is a true rock and roll feel to this song, especially with the bluesy, “Baby, baby, baby”s thrown in. What a shame Vince Taylor kind of lost the plot towards the end.

7. What I’d Say (Parts 1 & 2) – Ray Charles

You may recognize this song on sound, especially during the opening notes. Ray Charles was an amazing piano player, as well as a talented vocalist, and Parts 1 & 2 of this song showcase that wonderfully.

8. I Only Have Eyes For You – The Flamingos

I’ve never been huge on this song, though that could be due to the fact that it’s been used in far too many annoying ads in the last few years. No matter what circumstances I hear it in now, I’ll never fully appreciate it, thanks to advertisements.

9. Ne me quitte pas – Jacques Brel

There is a definite sadness and desperation in this song, in which Jacques is literally pleading, “Don’t leave!” With the heart wrenching piano melody accompanying his solid, emotional vocals, no one can resist the impeccable song.

10. Shout (Parts 1 & 2) – The Isley Brothers

Completely classic. Most of us will recognize this as the track you would hear at every single wedding ever.

Overall, Day Eleven felt good, because I felt odd after not listening to ten classics a day for a few days. I enjoyed the mix of jazzier tracks and classic rock and roll. Each track was enjoyable, and most were recognizable. As I’ve said before, I really enjoy hearing the progression of each genre, and the development of artists.
