The APMAs Honor Rob Zombie & X, Add Performances From Pierce The Veil and DMC (RUN DMC)

The Journeys Alternative Press Music Awards, fueled by Monster Energy Drink, has added even more performers and presenters, in addition to this year’s official red carpet hosts and esteemed recipients of the Vanguard and Icon Awards. The APMAs will take place on July 22, 2015 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

The APMAs announced that they will be presenting the revered Vanguard Award to hard-rock legend and respected filmmaker Rob Zombie. As a rock icon and filmmaker with a unique vision, Zombie has continuously challenged audiences as he stretches the boundaries of both music and film, selling over 15 million albums worldwide. He is also the only artist to experience unprecedented success in both music and film as the writer/director of six feature films with a worldwide gross totaling more than $150 million.

This year’s Icon Award honorees are none other than American punk-rock mavericks X, who were one of the most influential bands to emerge from the Los Angeles punk scene of the late ‘70s. The group’s first two albums, Los Angeles and Wild Gift appear on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time list.

The APMAs also announced this year’s AXS TV Red Carpet hosts: Every Time I Die’s wisecracking frontman Keith Buckley and New Years Day’s striking frontwoman Ash Costello. The pair will interview many of this year’s stars as they make their way down the red carpet and into the main event.

Gibson Brands is also returning as one of the main sponsors of the APMAs and will be hosting the official Gibson Backstage Artist Lounge. All performers, presenters, honorees and award winners will gather at the Lounge for their post-stage victory interviews.

Additionally, the APMAs announced Tumblr as an official partner. This year, the APMAs launched the first-ever “Tumblr Fandom Of The Year” award. Every day, thousands of fandoms post artwork, GIFs, funny memes and so much more on their Tumblr pages, and these nominees were among the most posted about last year. The nominees were chosen via Tumblr’s Fandometrics, and AP staff choices. You can vote for your favorite/the most creative fandom at altpress.tumblr.com through July 6.

Q&A: Like Mike’s Dan Wilson

like mike

Back in August 2011, Georgia-based pop-punk group Like Mike formed. The group quickly found their footing, with their first two singles recorded and plenty of shows planned in their hometown of Marietta, by October of 2011. Like Mike has hardly slowed down since their inception, performing alongside the likes of Cartel and Set It Off, performing at dates on the Vans Warped Tour, and releasing two EPs to date. The band is currently in working on their third EP, with their new single, “Knuckles Deep,” which is out now. Dan Wilson (drums) sat down with Planet Stereo to talk about the band’s new music, their plans for the summer, and much more.

Planet Stereo: Thanks so much for doing the interview. How are you?

Dan Wilson: No problem! I’m doing great, thanks.

PS: You’re preparing to release your third EP soon. What are you most excited for?

DW: I’m so excited for people to hear what we’ve been working on the last few months. This EP, unlike the last two, is all music we wrote together in the same room and the songs are better for it. I think listeners will be able to hear that. Other than that, I’m just ready to play all of it live. We’ve already started to incorporate some of the new stuff into our live set and it feels so good.

PS: Your new single, “Knuckles Deep,” recently came out. What made this song stand out as a single for you?

DW: I think it was just a good introduction to what’s next for us. It foreshadowed the slight shift in direction and even the quality of the new music we’ve been writing. Although I didn’t write the lyrics, they struck me as more personal and hard hitting than anything we’d released prior and I think you’ll hear more of that kind of writing in the new EP as well.

Austin Kerr (ex-Set It Off) Releases Second Statement Addressing Sexual Harassment Allegations

Today, Set It Off’s former bassist, Austin Kerr, has shared a second statement regarding the sexual harassment allegations he is currently facing. Set It Off removed Kerr from the current band line-up at the end of May, after which, he released his first statement. You can read his new statement below:

We live in a difficult world. It appears in every situation people are either too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Over the last few weeks I’ve learned that anything you say or do can be taken a multitude of ways…
It’s very important for people such as myself to take responsibility for the way that my words and actions are taken. For instance: Telling someone they have nice hair, could mean anything from you liking a color or trying to brighten their day, to hoping they’ll sleep with you.

Facts are subjective when dealing with the way someone feels. This takes special consideration. However there will always be some people that take advantage of opportunities where they feel scorned. Using the language of sexual assault, harassment, etc. carries a certain power in society.

We all can think of a time where we’ve been accused of things we didn’t do, had our actions or intentions taken the wrong way or blown out of proportion from what we meant. It’s part of the human condition. I’m sure many of you have experienced the result of that personally. Unfortunately on the internet anyone can post anything they want and it’s guilty until proven innocent.

I’ve learned you can’t just treat anyone like anyone, you have to be especially observant of the way they feel or will take things. This is something I hadn’t been paying attention to. Woman deserve more respect than that.

I was raised in a strong female household of four women, and probably would get my ass kicked if I ever harassed a woman, haha. However I was raised to be extremely affectionate, whether I had romantic intentions or not. Although I know many women who can attest to this in a positive manner, I now realize that some people take that sexually. That is something I now take full responsibility for.

It’s also true that facts can suggest to what did or did not actually happen, so here are some facts:
• I’ve attached are screen shots with what has always been my policy on underage girls
• This is a link to a blog post from a 3rd party perspective of one of the nights. http://bit.ly/1QoYPl6
• I have come one on to woman who have followed me on social media and attended shows.
• I will now never come on to another person who shows interest in something I’ve created again. That’s not what that type of attention means.
• I’ve on often drank heavily on tour and gotten too intoxicated to remember after show events. Some allegations seem to be based on these times.
• As soon as I first heard I made anyone feel uncomfortable 14 days ago, to make an effective end. I stopped drinking, flirting with and hugging anyone at shows or online. Then made this known to the sources of these allegations before the blog post went up.

I brought up leaving the band when It became apparent from the blog that fans felt unsafe at shows. I’ve always believed that’s a place people should feel safe. Everyone one has a right to feel harassed by anything. If you ever feel uncomfortable, no matter who or what the situation, I believe you should stand up and say something. I would never want anyone to not speak up.

I am actively working with several organizations to better understand woman and after training hope to eventually volunteer to help them. I vow to use this experience to get knowledge for both myself and others.

Austin Kerr (ex-Set It Off) Addresses Sexual Harassment Allegations

Earlier today, Set It Off announced that they had parted ways with bassist Austin Kerr, following the recent sexual harassment allegations that he was facing. Kerr has responded with a statement of his own, which you can read below:

As of two days ago I became aware of some serious allegations against me. There are two sides of every story and then there’s the truth. Fact is, I’m a guy who hasn’t always considered the way people may perceive my actions and while never forceful, there’s situations where I’ve been too pushy in several matters. I am taking full responsibility for my actions and behavior. I am so sorry for the effects of my actions and I apologize to anyone who has ever been made to feel uncomfortable by me in any capacity. I promise you it was NEVER my intention and I never thought I was entitled to anything.

I will carry myself differently in every matter I’m a part of from this day on. Upon first hearing of these matters, I immediately stopped drinking anywhere near shows, and stopped doing anything that might make someone uncomfortable (i.e. hugging them, picking them up, etc.). I will continue for the rest of my life being fully observant of other people’s feelings. After talking with the band, we have all agreed that I should part ways as nothing in this this should be attached to them in any way. I got to live my dream for years. For all the times, lessons and memories, I am so grateful.

Unfortunately attached to these allegations are half stories, exaggerations and untruthful statements. Since the tumblr post was released I have been approached by multiple people by their own accord who were there and can varify that some statements made are fictional or have proof of their falsehoods.

The truth is I’ve made people feel uncomfortable and I’m sorry. I encourage everyone to read into things before they believe them or make judgements. In often cases a lack of proof means something.

Moving forward, I am actively working on improving and making better decisions so that I will never make anyone feel like this again.

Here we go again! 15 tracks you HAVE to hear for March 2015…and the accompanying music videos you have to see. This month, we’ve got some amazing new releases from some of the best artists. As the months go by, it’s getting harder to pick just fifteen.

Anyway, check out some of these amazing tracks below:

1. All Time Low “Kids In The Dark”

This just encompasses everything I believe music to be about: escaping your problems, and finding unity in the middle of the crowd. Add in how catchy this song is, and I don’t think you can go wrong.

2. Trophy Wives – “Threshold”

It’s a fast-paced track that just makes you want to bounce around like a crazy person, and the chorus comes in brilliantly. The vocals remind me of 2009/2010 punk, when the harder chord progressions and screamo undertones started to really come in.

3. Set It Off – “Ancient History”

The song itself is catchy and cleverly pieced together, and then you add this video which seems to hint at Adam Sandler’s Click, had I actually found that movie as enjoyable as this…

4. Sam Smith – “Lay Me Down (ft. John Legend)”

This was my favorite track on Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour, so when he released as a single, I was thrilled…and now he’s added John Legend?? Granted, some of the beloved theatrics is gone, but it’s still impeccable, and this video for Red Nose Day is so beautiful.

5. Hands Like Houses – “I Am”

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the pure power of this track? Yes, okay, wonderful.

6. The Maine – “Miles Away”

Another single from American Candy, and it’s wonderful. Kicks off the album as the first track, with a sing-a-long quality.

7. Cordelia & The Buffalo“Free”

There are no words to express how much I love this single; soulful vocals, ethereal instrumentals…magic.

8. Light You Up“All We’ve Ever Known”

This makes 14-year-old me extremely happy. It’s anthemic, catchy, and powerful.

9. PVRIS “White Noise”

Another play on the movies, this time tackling Spielburg’s Poltergeist with a top 40’s worthy twist.

10. Youth League – “Young/Old”

A perfect introduction to the new Cardigan Records signees, showcasing just what they’re capable of.

11. Cajsa Siik – “State of Low”

A stunning new track, filled with harmonies, and ethereal instrumentals. The song radiates quality and sophistication.

12. Ella Henderson – “Mirror Man”

Soulful track, visually stunning video…you can’t go wrong.

13. Meg Myers – “Sorry”

Looking for a break-up anthem for the month? This is it. Meg Myers has an enchanting way about her, and it’s completely underrated.

14. Sam Hunt – “Take Your Time”

Wonderful instrumentals, stellar vocals, and a new way at writing about the initial “bar approach.” It’s gorgeous.

15. Shawn Mendez – “Life Of The Party”

This was a great track that popped up towards the end of last year and now there’s finally a video. It effortlessly fuses the melodics of an indie act with the booming lyrical style of a top 40’s anthem.

BONUS, because why not:

BriBry w/ Dodie – “You’re Alright”

Leon Bridges – “Come Home”

Oh Honey“Sugar, You”

Mariana’s Trench – “Here’s To The Zeros”
