Munchkin Removes Orca Whale From Sea Squirt Bath Toy Collection In Support of #OrcasLiveInOceans Campaign

munchkin orca.jpgMunchkin is all about spreading awareness on National Whale Day, and the importance of having orcas living in the ocean.

The brand has launched their #OrcasLiveInOceans initiative. After ten years of making a toy orca whale within their bath toy set, Munchkin has decided to put their principals before their profit by removing the orca from their top-selling Sea Squirt bath toy collection. Their reasoning? “Because a bathtub isn’t big enough for an orca.”

Munchkin also released a short video, which you can view below:

Did you know that at least 151 Orca whales have been captured in the wild for display in captivity since 1961? Only 23 of those 151 captures are alive today, and at least 162 Orcas have died in captivity.
Wild whales can swim up to 100 miles a day hunting and playing, which makes captivity an extremely stressful experience for whales. The emotional, mental, and physical stress that they endure weakens their immune system and makes them prone to disease and infection.
So what do you think? Do whales belong in captivity?

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Calls Out Connecticut High School For Banning ‘American Idiot’ Musical

GreenDayBack in 2010, Green Day shocked everyone with a Broadway production of the band’s hit seventh album, American Idiot. The show has since become one of the most beloved modern shows, unsurprisingly.

A Connecticut high school was slated to put on a production of the musical in early May, but the decision has since changed, and the school will not be performing the show.

Enfield’s drama club, the Lamplighters, began advertising auditions for the American Idiot production. However, their faculty director soon sent out a a general announcement to the school, which stated that the troupe will not put on the musical due to “a small number of extremely vocal people.”

In the statement, director Nate Ferreira stated, “Due to the mature content of the original production, I have been working with the publisher to modify the script, to ensure that it would be appropriate for a high school group to perform.

“This project was very successful, and we feel that the modified script and production notes maintain the integrity of the show, while removing profanity and the more adult scenarios in the original Broadway production. The publisher is even starting the process of turning our edited version of the script into their official ‘School Edition’ of the play, to allow other high schools to easily perform this play in the future.”

The compromise sounds awesome, but then the real bombshell is dropped:

“Unfortunately, a very small number of extremely vocal people have complained about our choice of production. This led to Mr. Longey [principal Andrew Longey] and I meeting on Friday to discuss a change in our choice of production. To be clear, Mr. Longey did not force us to change – he and I took a long and careful look at all aspects of the show, and all arguments on either side,” continues Ferreira. “At this late stage it is very difficult to switch to a different play, but I do feel that it is best for us to set aside American Idiot for the time being.”

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong called out Enfield High School on his Instagram. The post, which can be found HERE, reads:

“Dear Enfield high school board,  #enfieldhighschoolmusical #highschoolidiot #enfieldidiot It has come to my attention that you cancelled your high school theater production of American Idiot. I realize the content of the Broadway production of AI is not quite “suitable” for a younger audience. However there is a high school rendition of the production and I believe that’s the one Enfield was planning to perform, which is suitable for most people. It would be a shame if these high schoolers were shut down over some of the content that may be challenging for some of the audience. but the bigger issue is censorship. This production tackles issues in a post 9/11 world and I believe the kids should be heard and most of all, be creative in telling a story about our history. I hope you reconsider and allow them to create an amazing night of theater! as they say on Broadway … “the show must go on!” rage and love Billie Joe Armstrong ps. I love that your school is called “Raiders”

The school district’s superintendent, Jeffrey Schumann, spoke to NBC Connecticut, and stated that the American Idiot production was “dividing our kids.”

In direct response to Armstrong’s message, Schumann says, “This is not a censorship issue. This is a participation issue. We chose to change our production so we can get maximum participation.”

In an almost ironic twist, the drama club will now reportedly perform Little Shop Of Horrors instead.

‘Friends’ Reunion Is Happening…Kind Of.

friends reunion.jpgFriends is one of the most beloved TV shows of all time, and everyone has been pining for a spinoff of some description, a reunion, etc.

Fans have been satisfied with a few collaborations done in the past by the stars shows, but are still chewing at the bit for more. Well, NBC’s network entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt has answered the prayers of fans…kind of.

Greenblatt confirmed that they are currently working on a primitive special to commemorate TV director James Burrows, which will be set to his 1000th episode behind the camera.

Announced for the special, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer will be appearing.

“I shouldn’t go into detail,” said Greenblatt during NBC’s appearance at the Television Critics Association. “I’m hoping that all six of them will be there in the same room at the same time. I don’t know, logistically, if we can pull that off.”

Farewell Ziggy Stardust: David Bowie Passes Away at 69

David Bowie.jpgJust hours ago, it was announced that rock legend David Bowie passed away after an 18-month long battle with cancer. The announcement came via the artist’s official Facebook page (see the announcement below).

Considering the amount of hoaxes there have been about the singer’s death, the news was a shock.

Bowie’s death comes just two days after the release of his final album, Blackstar, which was issued on his 69th birthday. The album shot to number 1 on iTunes in the UK and number 2 in the US.

January 10 2016 – David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with…

Posted by David Bowie on Sunday, January 10, 2016

Bowie’s son, Moon director Duncan Jones, took to Twitter this morning, saying, “Very sorry and sad to say it’s true. I’ll be offline for a while. Love to all.”

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet” lang=”en”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Duncan Jones’ mother, Bowie’s first wife, Angela, was sequestered on the UK Celebrity Big Brother, and was informed of his death off-camera, choosing to stay on the show.

Bowie’s wife of 24 years, fashion model Iman, has not yet released a statement.

News of the flamboyant, theatrical show master’s death has been met with an outpouring of sympathy from millions of people, musicians, and even British Prime Minister David Cameron, who expressed his sorrow to the press, stating, “Genius is an overused word but I think musically, creatively, artistically, David Bowie was a genius. He was a master of reinvention, and one of the things that’s so incredible is almost all his reinventions were incredible successes and worked brilliantly. And so we mourn the loss of a great talent.”

Planet Stereo would like to send our deepest sympathies to David Bowie’s loved ones. RIP David Bowie.
