Joe Moss, former manager to the Smiths and Johnny Marr, passed away yesterday at the age of 72 after a battle with bone cancer. The news was revealed in a shared statement on Marr’s website where he credits his late-manager to the Smith’s success, saying, “Without him there wouldn’t have been any Smiths.
“Everyone who met him loved him; he can never be replaced.”
Moss served as a mentor to Marr before the Smiths formed, and once the band came together, he was the one who helped fund their start-up costs, including purchasing a van, securing rehearsal space, and more.
Though he finished with the band around the time of “This Charming Man,” he returned as Marr’s manager in 1999, where he continued to work until his death.
