Demi Lovato has been an outspoken voice for those suffering with mental illness, especially considering the star has found her fair share of struggles, including a diagnosis with bipolar disorder.
Now, the 23-year-old is bravely speaking about the troubled relationship she had with her late father, Patrick Lovato, who passed away from cancer in 2013. In a preview for the track “Father,” from her new album, Confident, Lovato admits to feeling “conflicted” about the song, due to the fact that her father was abusive. “He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person. And he wanted to have his family, but he knew he wasn’t capable of raising a family, and it was because of his mental illness.
“To know that it wasn’t fully his fault really was saddening to me, and I wanted to write about it. I wanted to process it.”
