Friday night, drummer Robert “Bob” Burns passed away in a car accident at just 64 years old. He was one of the founding members of legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1964, and was a member of the band till 1974, when he decided to quit because he wished not to tour anymore.

Burns played on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s first two albums 1973’s (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd) and 1974’s Second Helping. He was the featured drummer on such hit tracks as “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Simple Man,” and “Free Bird.”

Gary Rossington (lead guitarist/founding member) took to Facebook to release a statement about Burns’s death. Burns was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
